Our Dogs’ Lifestyle & Care

At FAREWELLHILL, our dogs are first and foremost much-loved members of our family. Their health, happiness and wellbeing are central to everything we do.

Our property in southern Tasmania is surrounded by beautiful bushland and has been thoughtfully set up to suit the active, intelligent and naturally watchful character of the Australian Cattle Dog.

Space to Exercise & Explore

Our spacious hillside runs provide the dogs with plenty of room to move, play and enjoy the outdoors. Positioned at the top of the hill, the runs also give them an excellent vantage point from which to survey the property, something our cattle dogs naturally love to do.

Each run includes a comfortable, elevated kennel, giving every dog a secure place of their own where they can rest while still feeling like the king or queen of their castle.

We also have secure pens close to our home and a large, grassed exercise area where our “house pack” can run, play and spend time together.

Part of the Family

While our dogs enjoy plenty of outdoor activity, they are not simply kennel dogs. They spend time with us each day and are very much part of family life.

Whether they are joining us around the property, enjoying a cuddle on the couch or settling beside the fire during a cold Tasmanian winter, our dogs receive plenty of companionship, affection and individual attention.

This balance of exercise, stimulation, rest and family interaction is an important part of keeping our dogs happy and well-adjusted.

Whelping & Puppy Facilities

Our whelping and puppy area is located in a warm indoor environment close to our main house.

This provides our expectant mothers with a quiet, comfortable and private environment where they can feel safe and relaxed while whelping and caring for their puppies.

Its location also allows us to remain close by and carefully monitor both mum and puppies during these important early weeks.

The Puppy Fun Parks

In addition to our hillside and house pens, we have created a number of special areas for our puppies.

These areas are filled with age-appropriate activities, surfaces, objects and experiences that encourage curiosity, investigation and play.

As the puppies grow, they are given opportunities to explore their surroundings which includes inside our home to encounter new experiences and develop important physical and problem-solving skills.

These positive early experiences help our puppies build confidence and prepare them for the transition into their new homes.

Diet and Nutrition

We believe that good nutrition is an important foundation for the health and wellbeing of our dogs.

Our dogs are fed a varied raw diet that includes Big Dog balanced raw food, Eureka Air dried, meaty bones and chicken frames, together with fresh eggs and yoghurt.

We have found that this way of feeding works well for our dogs and helps support:

  • Overall health and vitality
  • Strong bones and healthy joints
  • Healthy skin and a soft, glossy coat
  • Good dental health
  • Healthy body condition
  • Reproductive health and wellbeing

Each dog is treated as an individual, and their diet is adjusted according to their age, condition, activity level and stage of life. Growing puppies, active adults, expectant and nursing mothers, and older dogs all have different nutritional needs.
